The actor had joined the Fox show for its fifth season, which premiered on September 21, as a new series regular.

Fowler’s final appearance in the medical drama was in Episode 16, which aired on Tuesday, March 29.

Why Miles Fowler is Leaving ‘The Resident’

Fowler joined the show as Trevor in September 2021, and his character was described as being “hot-headed and passionate.”

The medicinal chemistry major was also someone who has an edge and believes “that the health care system is screwed up,” and he was described by Fox as being “a genius, though perhaps just a misguided one for now.”

In his final episode, Trevor declared that he had decided to give up on becoming a doctor and instead wanting to go into a different field by creating a biotech start-up.

Prior to that the character had been struggling to come to terms with the fact he was born after his mother Billie (Jessica Lucas) had been sexually assaulted at the age of 13.

It was not explained if his sudden departure was prompted by what he had learned about his mother, or if he had simply decided he’d had enough of training in medicine at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital.

TVLine reported that Fowler had finished his seven-month tenure on the show and the actor has not commented publicly on his departure.

It is understood by Newsweek that Fowler was originally slated to have a recurring guest role in the show and was then promoted to a series regular, but he had only signed up for a one-season arc, which he has now completed filming.

It is also understood by Newsweek that executive producers of the Fox show have left the door open for his character’s return in the future.

Newsweek has contacted Fowler’s representatives for further comment.

The Resident recently had a cast shake-up following the departure of Emily VanCamp from the role of Nicolette ‘Nic’ Nevin.

Nic, a nurse practitioner at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital, died in Season 5 after suffering from a traumatic brain injury following a car crash.

After her exit, VanCamp took to Instagram to pay tribute to her cast, producers, and writers and her time spent on The Resident, alongside a moving video put together by FOX of Nic’s final moments on the show.

She said: “Thank you so much for four beautiful years! Feeling so much gratitude for the relationships I’ve gained, the stories I’ve had the opportunity to tell, and the many lessons I’ve learned from playing Nic Nevin on The Resident.

“Thank you to everyone who came on this journey with me and this wonderful character. Thank you to the most incredible cast and crew in television—I already miss you so much.”

VanCamp also took the opportunity to thank nurses for their tireless work, and their “patience, grit, and dedication” to their field that helped inspire her role.
