Spider-Man 2 is aiming for a fall launch date, which puts it in the best spot to succeed this year despite it being a busy one. With spring and summer packed with highly-anticipated games and an all-new Spidey movie set to hit theaters in the summer, the game occupies Sony’s holiday window and ensures that Spider-Man is sufficiently represented this year. If Skull and Bones is anything to go by, game releases are always subject to change. For Spider-Man 2 and Insomniac, however, it’s more important than most others to make sure it hits the promised date, as the character’s popularity means Spider-Man is the busiest of all in 2023.

Across the Spider-Verse is Another Anticipated Follow-Up

Miles Morales will first be seen in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in the summer and Insomniac’s project should, all being well, launch a few months later. Steering clear of Across the Spider-Verse is critical as each version of Miles is very different, despite showcasing similar abilities. Should the film and the game release around the same time there would be a conflict in character direction, as it’s likely some would assume the two are connected in some way. A fall launch date for the game is enough separation to ensure both feel like separate products in unrelated franchises.

However, leaving enough time between the release of the Sony Pictures film and the Sony-published game could provide a potential opportunity, as appetites could be sufficiently whetted by the time the game hits shelves. 2018 was a huge year for Spider-Man with the game, the first Spider-Verse film, and Nick Spencer’s comic run doing well to keep fans of the famed wall-crawler satisfied with new content. Five years later, Across the Spider-Verse will have Miles Morales interact with a litany of other versions of Spider-Man, and its multiverse story will surely be different from that which the game presents. The connection between the two is Miles, and a fall release date for Spider-Man 2 means fans leaving the theater need only wait a few short months until they can reconnect with the character in an all-new story.

Miles Morales is a Spider-Man for All Seasons

With Insomniac’s 2020 Spider-Man: Miles Morales taking place over Christmas in New York and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse having a December release in theaters, many may have holiday memories of Miles Morales’ adventures. His game is draped in the holiday spirit, and to have some consistency by committing to a fall release would do well to make reacquainting with him in Spider-Man 2 feel all the more familiar. It would likely be strange to play a Spider-Man game in March, for example, as none of the titles that came before were released in that window.

It would make sense for Sony to have Spider-Man 2 hit its fall release date, as that period is usually packed with compelling experiences and the company needs some kind of representation to compete with the likes of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Call of Duty, and plenty of others. It’s a game that is sure to capture the attention of PlayStation 5 users everywhere as the first was a big hit, but getting out of the way of the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would be a good idea, especially as a fall launch would ensure that Spider-Man is on the minds of fans all through 2023.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is scheduled to release in the fall of 2023 on PS5.
