On Season 4, Episode 2 (“Kiss Me and Smile for Me”) of Good Trouble—released on March 16—Callie landed her dream job for the ACLU in Washington, D.C. Cue a sad farewell between Callie and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) and a surprise reunion on the flight to D.C. with Jamie (Beau Mirchoff).
As reported by Variety, Mirchoff is leaving the show too—with his character also moving to the capital for a job opportunity.
Before the episode aired, it was revealed exactly why Mitchell and Mirchoff were leaving.
Why Maia Mitchell left ‘Good Trouble’
COVID-19 is to blame for Mitchell’s departure. The Australian actor became homesick when she was unable to see her family for two years, so decided to move back to be closer to them.
Mitchell returned to Australia after she had filmed the Season 3 finale, but agreed to fly to America to film her last episodes.
Series co-creator Joanna Johnson told Variety: “I had known that that Maia had been considering moving on. She’s been doing this role for nine years. She grew up in this role between The Fosters and Good Trouble. She was 19 when she started. I went to her trailer, and I said, ‘So, I want to talk about Season 4, and I want to beg you to stay.’ She said how much she loves this family and this show, but that she needed to go home.”
Mitchell also mentioned her move to Australia in one of two goodbye posts on Instagram. She wrote: “While I have been so beyond fortunate to have this career and a job that I love, with not an iota of regret, for quite some time I have suppressed an undeniable gravitational pull to return home to Australia to be closer to my nearest and dearest.”
Mirchoff has not posted a goodbye message on social media, but he is exiting Good Trouble in order to give Callie the happy ending that many fans wanted for her.
In her Variety interview, Johnson hinted that both could return to the show at some point to give fans a update on how their relationship is progressing in D.C. She said: “She’s always going to be part of the family, and I don’t think it’s the last we’ll ever see of Callie. Callie’s journey is happening off camera, but we’ll catch up with her.”
She added: “I definitely hope to see Beau again. I love the character and I love him. He’s such a lovely guy.”
Asked whether the pair are going to be together in the future, Johnson said: “It’s a mystery, but we’ll find out.”
Good Trouble Season 4 airs on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on Freeform. All episodes so far are streaming on Hulu.
