If getting eliminated from the group stages of the Champions League was not enough, Van Gaal has had the audacity to get up from the bench and make a statement that would make any United fan seethe with anger. Despite the early elimination and a poor run of form, it is still too early to say if Van Gaal will get the sack sometime in the near future. But being a manager of one of the most prestigious football clubs in the world, the fans would be of the opinion that he has gone too far with this statement.
It is the exact reason for which he was appointed, to ensure sustained success. It is the exact reason the season tickets at Old Trafford are sold out months before the new season begins. It is the exact reason that people from all over the world tune in to watch this club from Greater Manchester play, regardless of the previous game’s result.
Last Tuesday, after the final whistle at Volkswagen Arena, if Van Gaal felt the backing of a small percentage of United supporters, it would seem like he would be losing a fair share of them with this blasphemous statement. Some may say he is losing it while the ones who have already been a part of this in the past would say, “I told you so.”
Considering that there has always been a lot of hope and belief around Old Trafford despite what has transpired in the last two and half years, it just goes beyond reasoning why a reputed manager like Van Gaal would openly state that Manchester United is nowhere close to winning titles in the near future.
He further went on to state: “Only one club can win the Champions League each season, it is not so easy to do that now, in this age, 15 years later. Back in that time, Barcelona had great money, Real Madrid had great money. Who else?
“Manchester United maybe and Bayern also. Maybe three clubs or four. Now we have much more clubs who have the money. Also the structure to win something. It is the same in the Premier League.”
If one can figure out anything meaningful from that statement it has to be only Louis Van Gaal. For a club which is third richest in the world, this excuse can make any sane person lose their mind.
Following their loss to Bournemouth you could easily say that Van Gaal was as at a loss to explain the embarrassing defeat. During the post-match analysis, he went on to say that “Whoever scores the winning goal, shall win.”
In this age of internet trolls it would have been quite difficult for United fans to realise if it was just another troll from rival fans or if Louis Van ‘Genius’ had actually stated it.
United fans are more often than not a realistic bunch. Had United bowed out of the Champions League at a later stage, they would have accepted the result as a shortcoming and would look forward to the future. With the elimination from Champions League being followed by a shock 2-1 defeat against newly promoted Bournemouth, Van Gaal has picked the worst possible time to make statements of this manner.
His statements certainly raise questions about the future of this gigantic football club as well his own future as a manager.
The message from the supporters will be quite clear going forward: “Make it happen or start counting your days because no one is bigger than the club.”
It will now be up to the Dutchman to take note of it as a word of caution and work to uphold the traditions of this famous club.
